London Feeding Programme

volunteer serving food

AMURT UK is committed to tackling food poverty and insecurity among vulnerable individuals, families, and the homeless across London

Our London Feeding Programme is run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers who lovingly prepare and distribute hot, nutritious plant-based meals every Thursday. We operate from our kitchen in Lower Clapton, established in 2023 in partnership with The Salvation Army. From this hub, we cook with surplus food generously donated by City Harvest and The Felix Project, rescuing high-quality produce that would otherwise go to waste.

We ourselves serve meals at three main locations:

  • Lower Clapton Hub (in partnership with Salvation Army)
  • 3A Cazenove Road, N16 6PA
  • Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Holborn

We also deliver freshly prepared meals to trusted community partners across Hackney, including Greenhouse GP Surgery, Health E1, and Streets Kitchen, where they are served to those in need.

In 2024 alone, we distributed over 26,500warm meals, 1,050 VitaBites nutrition bars, and hundreds of tonnes of fresh food, reaching over 13,000 people—a 44% increase from the previous year. But our service goes beyond food. Many of the people we support face not only hunger, but also loneliness, trauma, and emotional hardship. Our volunteers don’t just serve meals—they offer time, presence, and care. Whether it’s a cup of tea and a quiet chat, a warm blanket, or simply being heard, we work to ensure every person feels welcomed, respected, and seen. We believe that nourishment is physical, emotional, and human.

A large propotion of our 100+ volunteers have experienced their own challenges with mental health, and find purpose, connection, and empowerment in supporting others. Together, we build a resilient community of care.

What our service users say

“I may look smart, but these are the only clothes I’ve had for three weeks. I’m desperate. Without my phone, I’ve lost all contact and have no idea how to get back on track… I feel so listened to and so welcomed here.”
Dan, new service user, Hackney

“When I wake up on Thursdays, I get excited. The food is so tasty, and the space is so welcoming. It makes my week.”
Maria, regular visitor, Salvation Army housing

“Let’s make Thursdays great again. I feel heard, and I feel listened to.”
Micheal, full-time carer for elderly parent

Stories of Transformation

  • David, 80, overcame years of isolation, began eating well, and is now cooking at home for the first time thanks to our support and surplus veg.
  • Johnny, 50, recovering from multiple strokes and depression, found connection and purpose after joining our meals and now attends twice weekly.
  • Zula not only eats with us—she composts our food scraps at her allotment and returns with vegetables she grows for our meals. A beautiful full-circle story of community and sustainability.
  • Matthew, who rarely leaves his home due to learning needs, finds companionship and routine every week in our safe, trusted space.
